Senator Newman’s SB 570 Signed by Governor Brown

Tuesday, October 3 2017

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Governor Jerry Brown today signed Senate Bill (SB) 570, authored by Senator Josh Newman. The measure will amend the rules that govern eligibility for CalWORKs, to ensure Veterans and surviving family members are not denied benefits.

“I thank Governor Brown for signing this legislation that is a simple, smart solution to ensure that our veterans and their families have access to the rightful benefits they deserve,” said Newman.

Senate Bill 570 ensures that those who have sacrificed for our country-- Veterans and surviving family members-- fully benefit from the G.I. Bill and other US Veteran Administration education payments. It will achieve this by exempting qualified education benefits, stipends or allowances received from the US Veteran Administration from being counted as income or assets for the purposes of determining eligibility for CalWORKs.

State Senator Josh Newman is a veteran of the United States Army and Chair of the Senate Committee on Veteran’s Affairs. The Fullerton lawmaker has already had four measures signed by Governor Jerry Brown. Senator Newman represents Senate District 29 which includes cities across Orange, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino Counties.
