Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill (SB) 503, authored by Senator Josh Newman, passed the State Senate today with no opposition. The measure will allow taxpayers to continue to voluntarily contribute to a dozen tax check-off programs. The measure also extends the sunset date for the “Keep Arts in Schools” Fund to July 2022.

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill (SB) 442, passed out of the Senate today with unanimous support. The bill authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), aims to update the existing “Swimming Pool Safety Act” of 1996 to require at least two of seven safety devices specified by the Act. The bill would also require home inspectors to ensure pool or spa areas are equipped with two of the seven specified devices, at the point of sale. 

Amendment Would Preserve 12 Important Tax Check-Off Programs

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill (SB) 503, authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), unanimously passed the Senate Governance and Finance committee today with a critical amendment. The amendment would waive the required minimum contribution for one year for a dozen tax check-off programs, to ensure these programs appear on taxpayer’s 2017 returns.

(SACRAMENTO, CA) –Senate Bill (SB) 715, an accountability measure that would specify the criterion for removal of board members from state regulatory boards authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), passed the Senate today with bipartisan unanimous support. SB 715 would add failure to attend scheduled meetings to the list of reasons for which the Governor may remove one of his or her appointed board members from office.

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 42 passed the California State Senate today with unanimous support. SCR 42 commemorates the month of April as “Arab American Heritage Month” in California, and recognizes the important contributions of Arab Americans to our state.

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – A package of legislation aimed at assisting California Veterans and their families with reentry, education and access to social services cleared a major hurdle today in the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. The committee voted on Senate Bills 694, 747 and 776 respectively.

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Senate Bill (SB) 455, a measure related to pre-transfer status for military children, authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), passed the Senate today with bipartisan unanimous support. SB 455 will allow all military families to benefit from pre-transfer enrollment by clarifying that children of military parents can transfer to any school district where they will be residing, so long as they provide proof of residence within 10 days of the prescribed date of the parent’s Permanent Change of Station order.

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – On Thursday, April 6th Assembly Constitutional Amendment (ACA) 5, authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) and Assemblymember Jim Frazier (D-Discovery Bay) passed out of both houses of the Legislature. The measure will appear as a proposition on the next statewide election ballot, for citizen approval.
