(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Senate Bill (SB) 455, a measure related to pre-transfer status for military children, authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), passed the Senate today with bipartisan unanimous support. SB 455 will allow all military families to benefit from pre-transfer enrollment by clarifying that children of military parents can transfer to any school district where they will be residing, so long as they provide proof of residence within 10 days of the prescribed date of the parent’s Permanent Change of Station order.

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – On Thursday, April 6th Assembly Constitutional Amendment (ACA) 5, authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) and Assemblymember Jim Frazier (D-Discovery Bay) passed out of both houses of the Legislature. The measure will appear as a proposition on the next statewide election ballot, for citizen approval.

“I rise today as one of the joint authors of this resolution. Over the past few days, we've become familiar with a new phrase, "Extreme Vetting". As you might expect from America's first reality  television president, this is a clever bit of marketing, designed to suggest that the existing process for vetting prospective refugees was somehow deficient in the face of certain parties' systematic overhyping of the current threat, as some of my colleagues have already noted. By all objective accounts, this is far from true.

SCA 2 would require all future revenue raised by proposed transportation funding measures to be used for appropriate projects.

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, State Senator Josh Newman [D-Fullerton] introduced SCA 2, a measure to ensure that any future revenues passed by the Legislature to pay for road and highway maintenance will be spent exclusively on vitally needed repairs and not for other projects or services.

The current need for repair on our roads both local and statewide is massive. At a statewide level, there is a backlog of deferred maintenance totaling approximately 137 billion dollars.

Today, State Senator Josh Newman [D-Fullerton] was nominated by Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de Leon as the new chair of the Veterans Affairs Committee for the 2017-2018 Regular Session.   

Senator Newman, a United States Army veteran, will be replacing Senator Jim Nielson [R-Gerber] as chair. His priorities as incoming chair include workforce development and greater accountability and oversight of existing programs.
