Several lawmakers are voicing their concerns over the decline in local journalism in recent years.

In California, three Senators have introduced legislation to bolster local journalism. 

SB 911, introduced by Sen. Steve Glazer (D-Contra Costa) and co-authors Sens. Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica) and Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) would provide state grants to individuals and organizations to help them cover issues of importance within their communities.

"Three California state senators have proposed a new measure aimed at propping up media organizations that cover local news after decades of consolidation and closings in the journalism industry.

Sens. Steve Glazer (D), Benn Allen (D) and Josh Newman (D) introduced legislation Wednesday to create a $50 million fund that would deliver grants to news organizations that pledge to cover public affairs in their local communities."

Members of the state Senate and Assembly gathered for a third and final joint hearing on Tuesday to discuss how the Legislature might tweak the state’s recall process. Much like the first two meetings, Democrats and analysts agreed there should be a change, but what exactly it looks like is still unclear.

The calls come into police dispatchers at all hours. A person soliciting donations in front of a supermarket.  Someone sleeping on a sidewalk. An abandoned car being used for shelter. Calls from distressed neighbors wanting to help but unsure where to turn.

Parents play the key role in keeping children safe. Like most parents, my wife and I do all of the “normal” things to keep our five-year-old daughter safe and secure. In the car, we make sure that her seat belt is fastened; we taught her to cross streets safely; and we check the milk and other foods in the fridge for an expiration date. Nothing is more important to us than our little person’s safety and well-being.




A piece of legislation sitting on the governor’s desk would enable Chino Hills State Park to expand by more than 10% by incorporating 1,530 acres of untouched ridgelines along the eastern flank into the park’s boundaries.

Senate Bill 266 authored by state Sen. Josh Newman, D-Fullerton, was approved by both the Assembly and the Senate earlier this month and awaits the signature of Gov. Gavin Newsom.
