Sacramento, Calif. — State Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) announced today that his top budget priorities were included and fully funded in Budget Act of 2021. Senator Newman’s 2021 priorities included funding to address public safety and homelessness, investments to preserve additional open space at West Coyote Hills and expanded arts and cultural programming at the architecturally important Hunt Library.




WHAT: State Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), Chair of the State Senate’s Special Committee on Pandemic Emergency Response, has partnered with Teamsters Local 952, SEIU-USWW, and Albertsons to administer more than 1,500 first doses of Pfizer vaccine to individuals ages 16 and older. The Teamsters Local 952 Union Hall will serve as the vaccination site on Friday, April 30 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.




Sacramento, Calif. — Legislation to prohibit pay-per-signature incentives in the collection of signatures for qualifying a state or local initiative, referendum, or recall for the ballot, authored by State Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), passed the Senate Committee on Judiciary on Tuesday. In parallel, the Senator has decided to delay legislation that would provide the targets of recall efforts the opportunity to communicate with voters whose signatures may have been secured fraudulently or misleadingly in the conduct of an effort.




Sacramento, Calif. — A bill to establish a statewide system for automatic voter registration (AVR) passed the Senate Committee on Elections and Constitutional Amendments on Monday. SB 583, Secure Voter Verification and Enrollment, authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), passed by a 3-2 vote.

The legislation will create an AVR system in which adults who have provided proof of U.S. citizenship during a DMV transaction will have their information provided automatically to the Secretary of State. Citizens who do not wish to register to vote may opt-out. 




Sacramento, Calif. — A bill to create a statewide collection and recycling program at California retailers for consumer batteries passed the Senate Committee on Environmental Quality on Monday. SB 289, Better Battery Recycling and Fire Risk Reduction, authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), passed by a 5-2 vote.




Sacramento, Calif. — Members of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water passed a bill Tuesday that would require the California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to incorporate three parcels of land, about 1,500 acres, into Chino Hills State Park. SB 266, authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), passed with a unanimous, bipartisan vote.

Chino Hills State Park is situated in a densely populated region of the Los Angeles Basin and sees more than 300,000 visitors annually.




Sacramento, Calif. — The California State Senate Committee on Health passed a bill Wednesday that would require insurance companies to reimburse small- to medium-sized health care providers for reasonable costs incurred in the purchase of PPE and testing supplies during the pandemic. Senate Bill 242, authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), passed by a 8-2 vote.




Sacramento, Calif. — State Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) introduced legislation today to end the dangerous practice of imposing performance quotas on pharmacists based on profit, not health outcomes.

Under the provisions of SB 362, pharmacies in California no longer will be permitted to impose such quotas on prescriptions or services conducted by a pharmacist. Instead, licensed pharmacists will retain sole discretion in determining the appropriate amount of time required to fill each prescription and provide conscientious care to their patients.
