Dear Friend and Neighbor,
I hope that you and your family are safe and well. I’m excited to share with you my first District 29 “Citizen of the Month;” updates from our ongoing casework and new offices; and the most recent COVID-19 vaccine information. As always, please feel free to contact my office with any issues you’re experiencing with state agencies. My staff will be happy assist you in English, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, or Spanish.
Send us a message here or call us at (714) 525-2342.
I recently had the privilege of recognizing Becky Vazquez as my first "Citizen of the Month," for the 29th District (to be clear, this is an award to recognize citizenship as an admirable trait, defined as “the quality of an individual's response to membership in a community,” and not having anything to do with a person’s legal residency status). Becky serves as Director of the Childtime Learning Center in Brea, where she tirelessly works to improve the lives of children in their care. As you can see in the photo, my daughter Cecily is one of Becky’s legions of young fans and assisted me in presenting Becky with her certificate commendation. A sincere and heartfelt thank you to Becky Vasquez for all of her work on behalf of so many children and families, as well as her leadership and support of her wonderful staff during this immensely challenging time. It’s people like Becky who are making our district a better place.
Do you have a neighbor, colleague, family member or friend that is making a positive impact in our community? If so, I'd love to hear more about their work! Each month I’ll be honoring constituents in the 29th District who are doing the kind of extraordinary work being modeled by Becky. You can submit nominations here: https://tinyurl.com/g5oq7fqb
As Chair of the State Senate Special Committee on Pandemic Emergency Response, I was very glad to be able to partner with my fellow state senator from Orange County, Senator Dave Min, alongside distinguished regional health experts for a COVID-19 vaccine town hall. Thank you to University of California Irvine Associate Professor Dr. Andrew Noymer, CHOC Chief Government Relations Officer Jena Jensen, and MemorialCare Health System Chief Transformation Officer Helen Macfie for joining us. Senator Min and I provided an overview and answered questions about vaccine rollout across the state and in our region. You may watch the conversation here. (https://fb.watch/4oK5mKt4ZB/)
I am proud to inform you that my office has thus far opened more than 120 cases for constituents needing assistance with state agencies, such as the DMV, EDD, and countless other government agencies. As you know, this past year has been extremely difficult for millions of Californians, especially people who have lost their jobs and have had to draw on unemployment insurance benefits. So far, my staff has been able to recover more than $180,000 in unemployment benefits for residents of the 29th District. Let us know how we can help you.
We have relocated our District Office to the heart of the 29th District, downtown Fullerton. Our new address is 203 N Harbor Blvd., Fullerton, CA 92832. The new district office phone number is (714) 525-2342. Per current CDC and state guidelines, the office remains closed to the public, and district staff are working remotely. You may contact us by phone, email, or via my website. My team and I look forward to serving you from this new location when it is safe enough to do so in person. When that’s possible, look for news on our official house-warming, we’d love to see you.
County Restrictions
Orange County: Orange Tier
Los Angeles County: Red Tier (moving into Orange Tier on April 5th)
San Bernardino County: Red Tier (one week away from Orange Tier)
All Counties in Senate District 29 have moved/are moving from the restrictive red tier to the less restrictive tier of orange, per the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy.
Vaccines
This month, the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine arrived in California. This single-dose vaccine, which does not require refrigeration or the same levels of special handling as the first two vaccines approved for use in California, will help speed up vaccinations across the district and the state. As of March 30, 2021, California had administered more than 17 million vaccines.
In addition, California is now prioritizing education workers, setting aside a minimum of 10% of vaccines to workers in that sector, allowing for in-class education to resume for districts that have closed due to the pandemic.
MyTurn is the state’s website that will allow you to know when you may be vaccinated and schedule vaccination appointments. If you aren’t yet eligible, you may register to be notified about when you may sign up to receive the vaccine: https://myturn.ca.gov/
For questions about the vaccination process, contact the statewide helpline at 1-833-422-4255

Overall, California’s situation continues to improve in ways both large and small, giving rise to increasing optimism about our path out of this unprecedented public health emergency. But we all still need to continue to be patient, as well as remaining vigilant in our precautions against infection, so that we don’t lose any of the gains we’ve made thus far in our progress against the virus. Thank for continuing to do your share!
Sincerely,
Josh Newman
Senator, 29th District
