Senator Josh Newman and Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva announce state funding for West Coyote Hills Land Acquisition

SACRAMENTO, CASenator Josh Newman (D-Orange County) and Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Orange County) announced today that the City of Fullerton will receive more than $6 million in state funding to purchase additional park land in the West Coyote Hills.

The State Coastal Conservancy approved the disbursement of funds to Fullerton. Both legislators have worked for years to ensure Fullerton’s acquisition of this park land and welcome the approval of these much-needed monies.

"This has been a long, hard successful struggle and we’re proud of the outcome,” said Senator Newman. “West Coyote Hills is in a unique region of small cities that have been chronically underserved by parks and open space. This land purchase will help us towards our goal of protecting the entire 510-acre space for the benefit of both residents and wildlife.”

Assemblymember Quirk-Silva and Senator Newman secured most of the funding used by Fullerton to purchase 115 acres of the property originally planned for residential neighborhoods. In the 2021 budget cycle, the two legislators worked together to secure an additional $28 million towards preservation of the entire 510-acre park land.

“The community has been fighting to save this open space for a very long time. I’m thrilled to see the project is taking shape and that we will soon have a beautiful new recreation area in the heart of north Orange County,” said Assemblymember Quirk-Silva. “As the largest remaining tract of undeveloped land in north Orange County, it is important that West Coyote Hills be preserved as a park and as an educational resource for residents and children.”
